What is the difference between HTD and GT timing belt profiles?

HTD (High Torque Drive) uses a rounded tooth profile that distributes load across multiple teeth, offering high torque capacity but slightly less positional accuracy. GT (Gates Tooth) uses a modified curvilinear profile that provides higher power ratings, smoother meshing, and better positioning accuracy than HTD. GT belts require GT pulleys; they are not interchangeable with HTD pulleys of the same pitch.

Can I use a timing belt instead of roller chain?

Timing belts offer quieter operation, no lubrication requirement, and lighter weight compared to roller chain. They are preferred for clean environments, precision positioning, and high-speed applications. Roller chain is preferred for very high power, shock loads, or when center distance must be adjustable.
